Save the Environment of Nepal (Save Environment) was founded in 1993 by a group of dynamic and young social activists. It is registered with the District Administration Office, Rautahat ) regd. No. 47-051) as a non-profit making organization and affiliated to the social welfare council in 1993 (Regd no. 2169).
Save Environment is a community-based organization supported by both male and female members. Participatory action planning, local resources mobilization, cost effectiveness, delivery of quality services and transparency are the major guiding principles to the organization.
We believe that environment plays a lead role in the development of a country. Therefore, protection and promotion of this precious gift is critically important. The natural resources are over stretched as a result of haphazard development works; therefore, a massive campaign with high levels of commitments is imperative to save it.
Mission:
Te Save the Environment of Nepal acts to promote rational and sustainable use of natural resources to develop the community as a resourceful, livable and inspiring place to live in and to this end, strives to empower the group of people in the tradition of caring each other.
Strategic Vision:
Save Environment has set its strategic vision to contribute to achieve the organizational mission as follows;
“A well-protected natural environment fostered by a rational and sustainable use of scarce natural resources”.
Strategic Goals:
The Save Environment will be guided by the following three strategic goals:
- To pilot and scale-up environment –friendly and sustainable community-based development interventions,
- To empower the community people in the tradition of caring each other
- To expand the agency funding-base to support anticipated growth in the programs and services
Strategies:
The Save Environment will be guided by the following strategic directions to achieve the organizational vision for 2005-2010
- Develop pool of skilled human resources
- Develop participatory planning, implementation and review systems
- Carry out action researches to scale up appropriate development models and disseminate them
- Diversify partnership for extension of programmes
- Develop networking and coordination mechanisms with external development partners for synergy building
- Empower local people through programs on natural resource management, health education, community development and human resource development following rights-based approached ensuring that the environment protection, social inclusion, good governance and gender are cross cutting themes.
- Develop longer term strategic plans and implement them,
- Be innovative to strengthen resource mobilization capacity within the organization and implement it with an increased commitment
- Generate more revenue from programs
Past achievements/ current programs:
Save environment has been engaged in different sectors like environment, health, education and human resource development at local level. Projects were implemented in remote villages of Rautahat, Morang and Nawalparasi districts. A synopsis of the same is as follows:
- Environment protection: Global environment facility, construction of drinking water schemes, promotion of clean sanitation, construction and distribution of low-cost sanitary toilets, promotion of alternative sources of energy like bio-gas, small grants, income generation etc.
- Health promotion: Health education, construction of health posts, awareness generation against use of arsenic-contaminates water and distribution of bio-sand filters, HIV/AIDS prevention activities etc.
- Education: Campaign against child labor and construction of school building for children
- Human resource development : Development of skilled human resources particularly on environment protection, safe water handling, drinking-water schemes maintenance, good sanitary practices, HIV/AIDs
Management
Save environment is managed by a group of dynamic and experienced youths with diverse backgrounds on social and professional development. It has a strong bond with local level organized groups like users group, women’s groups, local governments etc. Therefore the Save environment builds up partnership with them for the programme purpose.
